Sustainability Through Education - GSA and its partner universities and healthcare organizations help solve the global shortage of nurses through the education and preparation of the next generation of nurse leaders and educators. To that end, GSA provides academic scholarships for advanced nursing degrees and facilitates work/study programs for qualifying international nurses. Most GSA Scholarship programs cover the cost of tuition, books, fees, as well as relocation and resettlement to the US.
University and Hospital Alliances - The foundation of a GSA program is an alliance with a participating university and one or more of its affiliate healthcare provider organizations. GSA forms the alliance, identifies prospective scholars, facilitates their relocation and resettlement in the US, and funds and administers the academic scholarships. The universities provide faculty, classrooms, and educational services, and the hospitals provide resources to help fund the scholarship program as well as opportunities for practical training and on-campus employment as permitted by U.S. visa regulations.
Ethical International Recruitment - GSA is a leader in socially responsible international nurse recruitment. We do not recruit scholar candidates from countries with critical nursing shortages as identified by the World Health Organization. Moreover, many of our scholarship programs are designed as cultural exchange programs to replenish the supply of nurse leaders and nurse educators in source countries. We subscribe to the Codes of Ethical International Recruitment of major nursing organizations including AACN and AONE. And, GSA was among the initial organizations to endorse the AcademyHealth Voluntary Code of Ethical Conduct for the Recruitment of Foreign-Educated Nurses to the United States, which was created with support from the MacArthur Foundation, to ensure fair, transparent, responsible international recruitment practices.
Scholarship Work/Study Program Design - GSA utilizes a work/study program design that typically consists of full-time graduate education and restricted, part-time clinical experience in a university-affiliated healthcare institution. Education programs can last several years, and are usually followed by a period of academic training or practical training. GSA Scholarship programs are designed primarily as education programs, not staffing programs; GSA does not employ the Nurse-Scholars. Some programs allow part-time restricted on-campus employment with a university-affiliated instiution to provide the participants practical training as well as a means of financial support during their education program period. GSA does not require payments from the Nurse-Scholars in exchange for participation in the scholarship program. Participating scholars must meet US standards of academic and clinical performance and remain in good standing with the university, the partner healthcare organization, US visa regulations, and GSA throughout the program period.
